Black Cat Appreciation Day

It’s Black Cat Appreciation Day 17 August.
Do not confuse this with National Black Cat Day, which is celebrated on 27 October.
As you can see, neither Belvedere nor I are blessed with black coats, so we have no skin in this, literally.BCAD was founded in 2011 by Wayne H Gibbs in honour of his sister and her own beloved black cat, Sinbad. His idea was to encourage others to love and appreciate black cats as much as she did. Unbelievably, many people don’t like black cats for ridiculous and frankly medieval reasons. Along with black dogs, black cats are often the last to be chosen for adoption, and frequently spend their lives in rescue centres.
What’s the matter with people?
Black cats are the smartest felines on the block.
Maybe that’s why dumb people don’t like them–they fear they might be easily out-brained–which they would be. Smart, sassy, sociable, sleek and splendid, black cats are assets to society. As for the persistent notion that they are ‘hard to photograph’, Belvedere and I, and Roger, would like to point out that maybe it’s not the cat that’s the problem here. Learn how to use a camera before you start blaming your subject matter.
So we intend to spend the day celebrating our gorgeous black cat friends and those we don’t know yet, and we hope you will join us.
