January 8th is also the birthday of physicist superstar Stephen Hawking. Although he apparently liked cats, the love did not extend to the Most Famous Cat in Physics. This is what he said.

‘When I hear of Schrödinger’s Cat, I reach for my gun. ‘

Or possibly pistol; Belvedere says it depends which sources you believe; anyway, you get the idea.

This is an excellent one-liner but, rather embarrassingly, Belvedere and I are not entirely certain what it means. Bafflement befalls us quite often when we read Hawking’s works. I like to think we are not alone in this, but do let us know.
